Let’s stop the negative connotations surrounding nudes because let’s face it — we all take them. From politicians to teachers, to your homie and your family members. But clearly, nobody wants to see nudes of their cousin just as much as they don’t want their own nudes to be seen by anyone other than whom they’re intended for. If you’ve ever been through the embarrassment of showing your mom a funny photo or a snapshot of somewhere you went, and she starts scrolling a little too much only to find a photo of your junk — I’m truly sorry.
So how do we stop this? Nude protection. Luckily, there’s an app that provides just that.
Jessica Chiu and YC Chen are the two developers who created Nude, a different from your average photo vault app specifically designed for NSFW photos and videos. The app uses artificial intelligence(AI)-based technology to scan your images in your photo library to determine which photos need to be locked away for safekeeping. The infamous Celebgate hack inspired the creation of this app, where hundreds of celebrities’ nude photos leaked, and a conversation Chiu had with a Hollywood actress about the matter. But that doesn’t mean you can only use the app for your more risué snapshots or even your home-made Snapchat porn, the app can also be used for important documents like passports, driver’s licenses, or any other material you deem sensitive by their manual uploading feature that allows you to import photos, videos, and documents.
The app, which launched in October of 2017, is super simple to use — to begin, all you have to do is download the app, sign up for an account, set your secure PIN or enable Touch ID on your phone, and then let Nude work its magic. The app will then use its AI technology to scan through your camera roll, delete all the nudes in your phone’s library and iCloud, and then transfer and store them locally in the app.
What makes this app stands out from other private photo vaults on the app market is its design, which uses Core ML, and doesn’t operate on any servers or clouds to store your photos. Core ML technology from Apple lets apps integrate trained machine learning models into their software, and supports image analysis. The people at Nude are never sent your photos for them to file themselves or sent to an outside server, so they can’t see them and are only stored within the app that is on your phone, on your screen through Core ML’s identification. Nude runs a scan of your image library every time you open the app and monitors activity in the background.
Nude will even keep track of any break-in attempts on your phone and takes a picture of the intruder!
As you can see, this app is pretty much everything you’d want in a secure photo vault app to store your nudes and other important, for-your-eyes-only stuff.
Nude is free to download and gives you a 30-day free trial, and will then give you the option of choosing a $0.99/month or $9.99/year subscription to continue using its services.
Although Nude is not yet available on the Google Play Store, they’re working on it!
Nude hopes to expand to Android devices by using TensorFlow Lite machine learning, so that it can work the same as on iOS devices with Core ML to scan your images.
